A teenager’s view on social media

This is a 19-year old undergraduate student’s perspective on the viability of certain social media channels to his peer group.

None of his findings are enforced by data or statistics, but social media platforms – just like fads, cultural memes, and slang –  have unwritten values and appropriate contexts attached to them that cannot be readily quantified. Certain posts that are celebrated on Tumblr, for example, may not be shareable on Facebook.

The same author has also released a ‘sequel’ to this article exploring sites like Google+, Reddit, and YouTube, and more ephemeral mobile apps like Tinder, Yik Yak, and Virus. The latter group is an interesting counterpoint to the recent trend of online curating, but it remains to be seen whether these apps are passing fads or a viable evolution of social media.
